In August last year, a group of young people were invited to explore together the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, in connection with Cardiff’s ambition to be recognised as a Child Friendly City. DATI was asked to work with the group of young people involved to design and make wearable, waterproof capes that could be used on local walks. The reversible jackets were made from recycled waterproof fabric, and recycled fleece.
MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT
Working together we articulated the rights they are most concerned about, centring it on the needs and agency of those most impacted and considering a “Decolonial Muncipalism” for a Post-Growth Economy - expanding the potential for those most impacted to take control and make change in their own communities.
The youth-led group worked to organise community activities that explored Cardiff and shared local knowledge to install a community of practice through exchange and discussion around young people’s experiences of the city. The group identified a ‘county lines’ approach to youth services which saw their youth centres disconnected from their neighbouring communities. To breakdown barriers, create connections and share skills, the group led ‘Sunset Walks’ that connected three communities of young people, physically and conceptually. The young people considered questions centred around comfort, appreciation and connection, in relation to the spaces we visited.
The Sunset Walks were organised by @nirushansudarsan@sahar_martinezz & @kiddus_ with each walk being led by a local youth leader and ending with a communal meal after sunset. A series of Sonic Maps were commissioned to both creatively document and evaluate the process.
